Parents Request for Temporary Travel Exemption from School

Overview

Under the Education Act (Chapter 327 of the Laws of Malta), school attendance during compulsory education is a legal obligation for all children. Parents who wish to take their child out of school for travel purposes for a period of 15 or more consecutive school days must apply for a Temporary Travel Exemption from the National School Support Services (NSSS). This exemption applies to absences for medical treatment abroad, family travel, or educational trips. Absences of fewer than 15 days should be arranged directly with the child's Head of School and do not require an NSSS application.

What you'll get

A written temporary travel exemption authorising your child's absence from school for 15 or more days for approved travel purposes. The exemption is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Approval is not automatic, applications are reviewed and assessed before a decision is issued.

Eligibility

Parents or legal guardians of children of compulsory school age (5–16 years) attending State, Church or Independent schools in Malta who need to be absent for 15 or more school days for travel purposes. Valid reasons include:

  • Medical treatment abroad
  • Family travel (including visits to relatives abroad)
  • Educational travel

Absences of fewer than 15 days: contact your child's Head of School directly — no NSSS application is required.

How to apply

Submit your application in person at the NSSS offices in Ħamrun, bringing supporting travel documentation (e.g. flight bookings, medical appointment letters, or relevant supporting documents depending on the reason for travel).
