The School Psychological Service (SPS)

Overview

The School Psychological Service (SPS) provides psychological support to children and young people between the ages of 6 and 16 who attend state schools in Malta and Gozo. The SPS aims to support students’ emotional, social, behavioural, and educational development by working in collaboration with educators, families, and other professionals. School psychologists carry out assessments, provide counselling, deliver interventions, and support inclusive educational practices.

Eligibility

The service is available to children and young people aged 6 to 16 years who are enrolled in state schools across Malta and Gozo. Priority is given based on level of need, school reports, and urgency of the presenting issues.

How to apply

Referrals to the School Psychological Service are made through the child’s school. 

Timeline

  • A concern is raised by a parent, educator or other school professional.

  • The school fills out and submits the official SPS referral form.

  • 5 days

    An acknowledgement is sent by SPS to the school once the referral is received.

  • 3 days to 12 months

    The psychologist receiving the referral conducts assessments or interventions as appropriate and provides feedback and recommendations
