Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School (GCHSS)

Overview

Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School (GCHSS), established in 1984 and located in Naxxar, is Malta's only state-run post-secondary school offering two-year programmes for students aged 16 to 18. It prepares students for tertiary education at the University of Malta, MCAST, and other institutions, as well as for direct employment. GCHSS offers two main programmes: the Matriculation Course (MC) and the Advanced, Intermediate and SEC/O Level Course (AIO). All courses are offered free of charge to eligible students.

The school offers Advanced, Intermediate, and Ordinary level courses across 32 subjects — all examinable by MATSEC. Upon completing the two-year programme, students receive a Post-Secondary Certificate and transcript. Following MATSEC examinations, students can achieve MQF Level 4 qualifications in their chosen subjects, and those who satisfy MATSEC requirements achieve the Matriculation Certificate — a prerequisite for University of Malta entry.

Applications for 2026/27 are now open: 21 July – 10 August 2026.

A second call for applications will open mid-September to the first week of October 2026 for students awaiting September MATSEC resit results.

What you'll get

Following successful completion of the two year course students receive a post-secondary certificate and transcript and once they sit for the Matsec exams they can achieve MQF level 4 qualifications in the subjects they sit for.

If they satisfy the requirements of Matsec they can also achieve their Matriculation certificate.
