The main aim of the fostering service is to offer a family experience to children, who for some specific reason, cannot live with their biological family. If integration is not possible, fostering may be utilised as a permanent plan.
Children are given the opportunity to live within a family environment where they are provided with love, care, security, reassurance and stability.
-Pre-service training and a Home Study report.
-If approved – A social worker is allocated to support the Foster carers
- Continuous training and support groups are provided yearly
- Foster carers may benefit from sessions with a counsellor and other therapists.

-Children in alternative care are invited to participate in ‘Focus groups’ which the Directorate alternative care carry out to look into the experience of children in alternative care.

-Initial meeting which aims to help the applicant become more familiar with the concept of fostering.
-Applicants together with all household members will be asked to present the Fedina Penali and a copy of the ID card as well as necessary checks with the Protection of Minor (Sex offenders) register.
-A pre-service training is provided
-A home Study report will be carried out through home visits and office visits
-The Fostering Board will approve/not approve the applicants
-A matching meeting takes place to match a child with prospective foster carers. The child’s needs are taken into account and the foster carer’s skills is paramount during the matching process.
-Once a match takes place, a meeting is carried out to plan a transition where possible.
-A social worker from the fostering team is allocated and the fostering service commences.
