The Children's Allowance Supplement is an automatic top-up payment introduced on 1 January 2021, awarded to families already in receipt of Children's Allowance in Malta. It is issued by the Department of Social Security (DSS) and requires no separate application, once a family becomes entitled to Children's Allowance, the Supplement is initiated automatically. The Supplement is available to all eligible claimants including EU nationals and Third Country Nationals residing in Malta, in line with their permit entitlement dates. Fostered children are not entitled to this Supplement.
As from January 2026, Children’s Allowance beneficiaries who exceed the means testing threshold of thirty thousand euro (€30,000), will be awarded six hundred and forty euro (€640) per child per year. Those not exceeding the means testing threshold will be awarded nine-hundred and ten euro (€910) per child per year. The payment will be issued quarterly, every thirteen (13) weeks together with the Children’s Allowance payment. This means that the payable rate will be one hundred and sixty euro (€160.00) per child every thirteen (13) weeks for those that exceed the means testing threshold and two hundred and twenty seven euro and fifty cents (€227.50) per child every thirteen (13) weeks for those that do not exceed the means testing threshold. Parents and Legal Guardians with joint custody will each be awarded half the applicable rate.
