YMCA Malta's Psychotherapeutic Service provides free individual and family psychotherapy and counselling to anyone living in Malta and Gozo. The service was first established in 2016 as part of YMCA Malta's Youth Empowerment Programme, and was extended to the broader community in 2017 to support those for whom private mental health therapy is not financially accessible. It has since become a core part of YMCA Malta's Wellbeing Programme — between 2018 and 2022 alone, 1,244 psychotherapeutic sessions were delivered to service users, with 143 new referrals received in 2023 and over 954 hours of therapy provided in that year alone.
Sessions are offered free of charge, with donations accepted when possible. Each client is met with professional care and understanding, tailored to their specific emotional and behavioural needs. The therapeutic process is grounded in respectful communication and a warm, nurturing approach that fosters trust and empathy. Clients are supported to strengthen their skills in areas that matter to them, with the ultimate aim of developing greater autonomy and independence.
The service is delivered from YMCA Malta's Family Centre in Valletta and through YMCA Malta's Social Services Hubs. Therapy sessions for children and young people require parental or guardian consent for clients under 18 years of age.
